The number of car owners who choose public transport on the European Day without Cars increases. On 22 September, travelling in public transport is free. This year another record has been broken. ZTM ticket inspectors checked over 1280 vehicle registration cards.
The “promotion” was addressed only to the private car owners, or joint owners. They could travel for free using all means of ZTM public transport in both zones, including KM and WKD trains under the Joint Ticket. The passengers were only asked to show a valid vehicle registration cards with their personal data.
People take more interest in the initiative. In 2008, 70 drivers took the opportunity of free travel (ZTM ticket inspectors checked 70 vehicle registration cards on that day). In 2009, there were 275 such passengers. In the previous year the number of drivers who resigned from taking cars that day was almost 500. This year the number doubled. On 22 September, 1281 vehicle registration cards were checked (the number of the drivers who left their cars in garages could be in fact higher). Although the traffic jams did not disappear from the roads, there were 1281 cars less. This is the best argument for such actions.
The condition of the “promotion” under EDWC are not complicated. You can read them on ZTM website. We also include them in the statements for media and in our profile on facebook. It should be also emphasized that the conditions have not changed for years. Nevertheless, there are still such passengers who have not read them. Fortunately, these are only single cases.
On 22 September, ZTM ticket inspectors gave eight requests for payment to the passengers who presented the registration cards of other drivers. Additionally, three passengers in similar situation decided to pay the fine at once. One of the passengers got a fine for presenting a copy of a vehicle registration card. Another fine was given to a driver, who instead of a registration card, showed a car insurance certificate.
Each appeal submitted against the ticket inspector decision will be considered individually taking into account the idea of European Day without Cars.
